Supply Chain - Preparation

Learn about the health & welfare of livestock

Live export depots, also commonly known as quarantine facilities, are an essential link in the exporting supply chain.

Feedlots can sometimes also operate as quarantine sites to help ensure the health of livestock for transport overseas.

Quarantine and biosecurity has always been an important part of the livestock export supply chain to ensure human and food safety.

Watch this video to find out more about how quarantine facilities operate.

Feedlot - Health and Regulations

Protocols for the export of breeder livestock are generally more costly for exporters. Breeder cattle have additional testing requirements for health status and often longer quarantine periods post arrival.

Vets

Feedlots allow multiple individual inspections by veterinarians and constant observations by trained stock people.

Livestock are checked over by trained Vets to ensure their health and well-being prior to being loaded onto livestock ships.

During their time in the feedlot livestock will be segregated into groups based on breed, weight, age and sex.

The importance of shade

During their time in the feedlot livestock will be segregated into groups based on breed, weight, age and sex.

The Australian Lot Feeders’ Association (ALFA) encourages all feedlots to consider the benefits that shade brings to the cattle they care for, their enterprise and collectively as an Industry.

Feedlot design for good Animal Welfare

Livestock are handled quietly and calmly throughout the animal’s transition from on-farm through to vessel loading.

This reduces stress from environmental change and aids each individual animal’s adaption to their new surroundings.

Watch this video as experienced stockman Paul Heil explains how facilities are designed with animal welfare in mind.
